If the gods had a DJ, this would be their playlist

Or at least such is the claim of the Rhythm Divine, a weekly radio program that serves as “a window into world sacred music and song, from temples and churches to the pop charts” on Australia’s ABC radio. And on June 1st they had a show about the music of the Baha’i Faith:

[that was] the soaring sounds of the Australian Baha’i Temple Choir, with ‘Be Thou Content’. All Baha’i lyrics are based on the writings of their prophets, the Bab and Baha’u'llah, but the music is modern, written in that case by the choir conductor, Linda Safajou.

It was recorded in the Temple at Mona Vale in Sydney where only unaccompanied voices are allowed. Outside the temple though it’s a different matter, as you’ll hear in this next song.

Baha’is have been making an impact in Polynesia for 50 years, with an estimated 60000 followers in places like Fiji, Western Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands. As a result Polynesian influences have crept into some of the newer forms of Baha’i music. Here’s a Sydney based group called Mana and you’ll hear the Polynesian influence right from the start.
