I read somewhere about elections in the running of affairs of the Baha’i faith. It says that Baha’is actually have an election-based system that operates in contrast to current political systems. Elections are by secret ballot, and no nominations or campaigning are allowed.
People are expected to vote in a prayerful manner according to their individual consciences for those they feel best exhibit the qualities necessary for service, without any discussion of individual personalities. It is said that the best elected representatives are those that have no desire for office and think themselves unworthy of the position, as they will best manifest the proper attitude of impartiality and service.
The quote is great, though the author Anne Mugisha uses it later on in the piece to support the nomination of a candidate for the presidency and calls on others to do what they can to promote his campaign. So close, and yet so very far…
