Denial of Education in Iran update

Written by ry on November 25th, 2005

There was a story out yesterday in The Fulcrum, the University of Ottawa’s student paper, about the denial of higher education to Baha’is in Iran.

UNIVERSITIES ACROSS CANADA are raising awareness about the academic injustice in Iran. The Closed Doors campaign aims to make people aware that Bahá’ì students in Iran are being denied the right to higher education because of their religious beliefs. The University of Toronto, Carleton, and Queen’s University join the U of O in participating in this year’s Closed Door campaign.

In light of the event, the Campus Association of Bahá’ì Studies (CABS) joined forces with CABS at Carleton University in hosting guest speaker Dr. Payam Ahkavan, who spoke about the discrimination in Iran.

Though it’s a little late now, there’s more information about Dr. Ahkavan’s talk here (as well as a slick poster that we should all print out and stick in our lockers).

The timing on this is perfect as I was sitting in front of my computer just yesterday wondering how things were going with this campaign. So how about it faithful readers, anyone else with hot news?

Watch this space… apparently Carleton University’s student newspaper will be running an article soon. This is really amazing for the Ottawa and Carleton CABS, I think it may be the greatest amount of coverage we’ve ever had for this kind of event. Apparently Dr. Akhavan gave a stellar talk on the subject and the room was packed.

I am writing a story on the York University section of your campaign and I wanted to know how many Canadian universities are involved in the campaign?
