Update on Bahá’ís in Iran
As a follow up to last week’s post about the report from the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief outlining concerns about actions by the government of Iran against the Bahá’ís, here is a great piece by Ruth Gledhill, religion correspondant for The Times. She goes into a brief history of the persecution that the Bahá’ís have faced in Iran, calling for the world to pay close attention to what is happening right now, and saying that she does “not want to be part of another ‘conspiracy of silence’”. She closes with this:
As much pressure as possible needs to be exerted on Iran to prevent the ultimate elimination of a community that is dedicated to what we all want, peace.
Thank you Ms Gledhill, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

I agree with Ms Gledhill’s comment about the need for as much pressure as possible being exerted (Prince Charles etc) on Iran to respect the right of all peoples to freedom of religion.

The Baha’is in Barbados, West Indies, are very concerned over this resurgence of persecution of their spiritual brothers and sisters in the cradle of their Faith. They have been received by the Ministry of External Affairs when an up-date on this situation was given. Special prayer sessions are being convened to intercede on behalf of the sorely tried and tested Baha’i community in Iran.

As an Australian Baha’i I am very concerned about what is happening in Iran. I am very pleased to note that my concern is being felt in other parts of the World, and I commend Ms Gledhill for bringing it to peoples attention.

Over 160 years of continuous persecution of a peace-loving, progressive and non-political community in the land of its birth! When is it going to stop?
Thank you Ms. Gladhill for bringing the plight of the Baha’is in Iran to every one’s attention.
