Egypt Update: Things Aren’t Getting Any Better for the Baha’is
I have been somewhat remiss in my duties to keep you all updated on things going on in Egypt lately, so here’s a great big update for you.
Over a month ago there was a court decision to allow Baha’is in Egypt to identify themselves as Baha’is on their govenrment documents. It was a great victory for the Baha’is and for Egyptian human rights. Sadly, shortly after the ruling the government declared that it would be appealing the decision.
Well, last week the appeal was filed and a series of articles were written about what was happening (check here and here). Aside from the articles though, a young Egyptian blogger also picked up the story and did a series of posts (1, 2, 3, 4) about her thoughts on the Baha’i Faith in Egypt (Don’t be put off by the fact that her first post was titled “Baha’is in Egypt: A Danger on National security”. While she states very clearly her stance as a Muslim, she seems very sincere and open-minded in her investigation of the Faith). You can also read Marco Oliveira’s response to her first post on his blog, Povo de Baha.
And finally, for a little more background on this whole situation, here’s a press release from The Arabic Network for Human Rights from back in December 2005.
