It’s been a pleasure to follow Sheyda Sabetian’s playful and colourful design work on Instagram (her handle is @sheyda.design). In this post, Sheyda introduces herself, tells us about her work and what inspires her. I hope you enjoy this gallery of her art and her responses!
My name is Sheyda, I was born in Guatemala but am currently living and working in Berlin as an illustrator and brand designer.
I do mostly editorial illustrations as a freelancer for magazines or books. I also work with organisations like Transparency International on illustrations and frame by frame animations on subjects related to corruption. I started working on illustration in early high school and the first years of university where I studied graphic design. There I was exploring with different materials, types of paint, markers, coloured crayons, carbon pencils, etc. These were always my favourite subjects. Now I do mostly digital illustration on Procreate with the Apple Pencil. It’s nice because I can sketch there and then work with layers on top of the sketch for the final art. I also work as a brand designer at Blinkist here in Berlin. There I get to work on things like illustration guidelines, art direction for book covers, etc.
Nature inspires me (for example my cat Kimchi). I love how perfect God’s creation is and I can see it so clearly in nature and animals. Women and diversity also inspire me. I like to represent underrepresented groups of people and show the beauty in diversity.

I think art has always reflected the society we live in. And through art we have been able to better understand how society worked in the past as well. I believe art can also help transform and contribute to a better society by using it as a way of reflecting our higher nature.
I would say to just create, experiment with all the different kinds of materials there are out there and that you might have at your disposal. Don’t start with digital only, start with paper. Paper has a different and special power to it. It makes you better understand the world around you and the shapes you can draw with different materials.
