Graeme Duckmanton has shared with us that “using the arts for self expression has been encouraged in our community in Livingstone Shire, Queensland. This poem, ‘A Blade of Grass’, takes its inspiration from the Baha’i Writings.”
A Blade of Grass
From all that we know from the first to the last
But who wills the growth of a small blade of grass?
That’s nurtured in sunshine, rain drops and dew
And anchored there firmly, but the question is who?The soil and microbes are too many to know
The connection and structure helps its knowledge to flow
Each in its kingdom it supports what’s above
As if it’s created from the will of pure love. The mystery’s not whether grass grows or it can’t
The story itself is the life of the plant
The seasons it faces, the storms and the sun
The nobility of life that it’s learnt to be one.The life of the grass and the knowledge it holds
The attacks from all sides as it still stands there bold.
The kingdom it comes from is lower than ours
But the mystery is one including its flowers. The flowers are its temple; they worship the sun
They attract the next kingdom, the insects they come
To feast on the sweetness and glory in kind
To forward their progress, as if they have minds. The beasts of the field feed on what’s below
The grasses and flowers essentially grow
The soil supports the growth of them all
But again, what wills the grass seeds to fall?Man is the farmer, he cultivates crops
From grasses to beehives he masters the lot
The soil’s the place where he buries his bones
Is his knowledge all gone then and lies there alone? The four kingdoms of God are all so reliant
To take one from the chain would not be compliant
Man moves through the kingdoms from the first to the last
His search for true knowledge can be found in the grass.
