5 Baha’i Books About Marriage

December 13, 2015, in Articles > Books, by

In the Baha’i Writings we are told that marriage is “a fortress for well-being”1 and preparation for a lasting union is something we can all benefit from. So whether you’re single and hoping to find a partner, or already investigating someone’s character, I thought it would be useful to put together a short list of books to help you get started in your own preparation to building that fortress.

1. Marriage – A Fortress for Well-Being

Marriagefortressforwellbeing200x323

One of the best parts of this book is the way it addresses topics like dating, as well as common themes such as detachment and trustworthiness. It incorporates the Bahai Teachings as well as commentary from the editors to present a view that is very relatable and easy to understand and apply to ones daily life.

You can purchase a copy of the book from your local Baha’i distributor, or here on Amazon.com.

2. Conscious Courtship – Finding Someone to Love for the Rest of Your Life

This book is unique because it combines the Bahai Teachings as well the author’s experiences as a professional in the field of psychology. It’s a balanced mix of spiritual and practical. It isn’t heavily saturated with one or the other and offers fresh perspectives that I have not seen in other books.

You can purchase a copy of the book from your local Baha’i distributor, or here on Amazon.com.

3. Marriage Can Be Forever – Preparation Counts!

Mcbf3

This is a wonderful guide for preparing for marriage because it’s a hands on workbook with lots of interactive pages that include quotes and questions that you answer for yourself as well as with a potential partner. The process of thinking about the scenarios and questions presented is a helpful tool.

You can purchase a copy of the book from your local Baha’i distributor, or from Susanne Alexander’s website, Marriagetransformation.com.

4. Pure Gold – Encouraging Character Qualities in Marriage

Pgs2

This book focuses on an essential element of a successful marriage: recognizing and developing character traits. It helps us to build the qualities needed for a wonderful relationship as well as assists us in knowing what to look for in a potential partner.

You can purchase a copy of the book from your local Baha’i distributor, or here on Amazon.com.

5. Thoughts On Marriage

Written by Mrs. Margaret Ruhe, the wife of former member of the Universal House of Justice, David Ruhe, this book offers an interesting perspective because it incorporates her educational background of sociology and psychology with her deep knowledge of the Bahai teachings on this subject.

You can purchase a copy of the book from your local Baha’i distributor, or here from the Indian Baha’i Publishing Distribution.

There is another Baha’i book on marriage, from Baha’i Publishing. Perhaps it was overlooked because it’s already ten years old. “Partners in Spirit:What Couples Say About Marriages That Work” If you haven’t seen it, and are interested in
This topic, I commend it to you.

Susanne Alexander, Johanna Merritt Wu, and Jeremy Lambshead teamed up to write a book called Starting with Me: Knowing Myself Before Finding a Partner. Its tagline is “9 transformative steps based on the Baha’i Faith’s teachings about relationships and marriage”.
