Where to find Baha’i Sheet Music Online

April 5, 2013, in Articles > Music, by

In this day and age it’s become much easier to get a hold of new information and materials. Years ago, if you wanted to play an instrument like your guitar or keyboard at a gathering or camp, you’d have to get things like sheet music off other people and from books at Baha’i stores. Now, all you have to do is get online, grab the music yourself from the comfort of your own home and print it off!

Music is a important ingredient at feasts, firesides, devotionals, childrens classes, and many other Baha’i meetings, as it is a ladder to the soul. So getting those upbeat tunes to sing along with and liven up your events is a must!

As Baha’u’llah says,

We, verily, have made music as a ladder for your souls, a means whereby they may be lifted up unto the realm on high.

-Baha’u’llah, Kitab-i-Aqdas

Baha’i sheet music can be found on these handy dandy websites:

1. Baha’i Songs, which has chords and lyrics for 100 songs. Songs are organised in alphabetical order and are super easy to find.

2. Baha’i Songs with Guitar Chords has a nifty file with a large number of songs and guitar chords. The songs here are very popular at Baha’i camps and childrens classes! Scribd is a paid service however, so if you want to fully access the songs they host on their website, you’ll have to subscribe.

3. Manifold Melodies has sheet music for piano on a small selection of songs such as ‘God is sufficient unto me’ and ‘Dastam Begir’.

I thoroughly recommend checking out these sites because they host a great selection of songs; the very same songs you’d sing along to at friendly gatherings!

I hope you find them useful!

Thanks for posting information about my web site! May I add that most of the music I’ve posted is for choirs or solo singers, though it can also be used by pianists.

Also, if people have sheet music of Baha’i songs, feel free to send them to me and I will add them to my web site.

We now have a category page started at Bahaimedia.org:

http://bahaimedia.org/Category:Music_score

As it has just started, there is only one item (my user page: http://bahaimedia.org/User:Brettz9 ) but that user page links to a couple of externally hosted scores in addition to some beginning attempts at transcribing my own music.

The reason I mention this so early and the thing that is so special about this (besides the fact that placement on Bahaimedia may allow some integration of content with the other wikis like http://bahaikipedia.org and http://en.bahaitext.org) is that scores encoded in the format used on these pages are originally written and remain editable by their constituent notes and note durations–information which is then translated behind the scenes not only into a visual, printable musical score but also into an audio file that will automatically play back the song!!

One can still upload and reference live recordings to http://bahaimedia.org/Special:Upload , but encoding the notation offers the benefit of precision without the need to generate and maintain one’s own graphical musical scores or MIDI files.

For the techie sound buffs out there, one can also download the music as a MIDI file, allowing intelligent remixing of the song within MIDI-aware software (modifications can also be uploaded back to the server as a MIDI file, but there currently is no server support for converting the MIDI file back into notation, even while there does appear to be some software solutions out there on the web for doing this).

I’m thrilled to announce the creation of http://www.BahaiChoralMusic.com, a much needed online resource for free sheet music and audio files of Baha’i-inspired choral music! Please check it out and let me know if you: 1) have any compositions to upload (with or without practice audio files); 2) know of a choir that can by listed on the Worldwide Baha’i Choirs page; or 3) know a composer of Baha’i-inspired choral music that can be added to the list on the Composers page. Enjoy!
