June 18, 2023 will mark 40 years since 10 Baha’i women were hanged in Shiraz. Their only ‘crime’ was their refusal to renounce their beliefs in a faith that promotes the principles of gender equality, unity, justice, and truthfulness. This collection highlights Baha’i Blog content relating to the ongoing persecution of Baha’is in Iran.
In this Baha’i Blog interview, Sonjel Vreeland speaks with singer-songwriter Elika Mahony.
You may recognize Elika Mahony by her songs in diverse languages, such as “Waves of One Sea”, or from her albums dedicated to momentous occasions, such as The Exalted One and The Ancient Beauty which are dedicated to the bicentenary anniversaries of the Births of the Bab and Baha’u’llah respectively. Elika is a vocalist, composer, pianist, and artist and it was a pleasure to speak to her and hear about what she’s been working on, and on the power of music to unlock hearts.
In her innermost heart, Sonjel is a stay-at-home parent and a bookworm with a maxed out library card but professionally she is a museologist with a background in English Literature. She currently lives on Prince Edward Island, an isle in the shape of a smile on the eastern Canadian coast. Sonjel is a writer who loves to listen to jazz when she's driving at night.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia.
We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their cultures; and to elders both past and present.
