5 Year Plan Talks by Tom Price

September 27, 2011, in Articles > Audio, by

Baha’i music composer Tom Price recently gave a series of three talks about the Five Year Plan at the Tennessee Baha’i School. With his permission, Baha’i Blog is pleased to share with you the talks to stream from our site or to download – and best of all, it’s completely free!

The study of the 5 Year Plan is something we’ve all been encouraged to do, and we hope these talks will help you with this. We know that anyone who has ever heard Tom Price speak will be frantically clicking away at the download buttons, and for those of you who have yet to tune in to one of Tom’s talks, you’re in for a treat!

We hope you enjoy the talks and please let us know what you think in the comments section and feel free to share this post with your friends.

Happy Listening!

PLEASE NOTE: During these talks Tom Price mentions that these are a part of a series of talks he has prepared. The rest of these talks have not been recorded yet, but Tom will be providing them to Baha’i Blog once they are presented. If you’d like to be notified of our new posts (like these talks), please sign up to our email list.

Dear Naysan

Thanks for making these available. Very interesting, informative, inspiring, and i like the sense of humour “Epochal Magnitude” cracks me up, but yah the depth of insight and particularly the focus on “Transformation” and putting into practise….i love it, and he mentioned other talks and making these available, the full series of around 8 hours…do you have access to these? Can you put me in touch with Tom Price. I volunteer for the Bahai Distribution Service SA and i would love to, if Tom gives us permission, to make CD copies availble to friends for listening in their cars and ipods and homes etc. What do you think?

Although I find deconstructing fatiguing I managed to stay alert and even enjoy this. I would like to hear the rest, especially on Prejudice. I am particularly interested to hear about the prejudices , such as the stigma towards the mentally ill that demonizes them, and also criminalizes them and their, often, companions – substance abusers and users. And other such invisibilities of the old and sick. Those very prejudices of omission or commission that accompanies all stereotyping of a subgroup that is perceived to be deviant. I would be interested to hear Tom speak to this as the net, and this new site, can contribute much to the housebound becoming part of something community-like, which I hope you had planned for, on the web.

ACTION: In Portland, OR, with encouragement from our Area Teaching Committee (ATC), a small, but growing number of believers, meet weekly to listen to the Talks by Tom Price on The Five Year Plan, 2011-2016. Individuals are given clipboards, pencils and copies of the current Five Year Plan. We listen, take notes and consult over bread and soup in a Baha’i home. Each Baha’i focuses upon his own role in the Plan and shares it, enabling the host to report back to the ATC.

Dear Azam,

SHARING: Portland, Oreon is grateful to have a Baha’i Center. We started gathering at the Center on Thursday mornings for 3 hours. Today 6 Baha’is, including a pioneer from Panama listened to Talk #3, “The Hight Calling of the Five Year Plan,” took notes and consulted at length. The Baha’is included those with or without Internet access. NEXT: Each participant is to invite another Baha’i for ongoing reading and study of The Plan on Thursdays at the Center. This number will grow!

Are we praying and believing in THE CREATOR out of fear or we are really encounter the CREATOR or are we believing the preachers. prophets, saints and so ali religious belivers who came to this world left their teacings for us to follow. Whateve it can be there is THE CREATOR who created all HIS creation for us to follow one teacing that the teachings are of reality that there is only ONE CREATOR and THE ONENESS OF ONE is prevailing in all souls as we are all bleong to that only ONE CREATOR.

Just recently I heard a talk by Tom Price on this quote.

Therefore, while there is yet time and the arrow is in the bow, enter ye the chase and strike ye the game. This game is the good-pleasure of God, and this chase is the merciful Providence; that is, living in accord with the divine instructions.

(Abdu’l-Baha, Tablets of Abdu’l-Baha v3, p. 573)

I wonder if you could pass on my thoughts to him that while I thought the talk was very good and very appealing to youth I think this interpretation of the word ‘game’ is incorect. I am sure that ‘game’ here refers to, in metaphorical terms, the catching of something you are chasing as in catching a rabbit rather than a game that people play. In this case the ‘game’ is the good pleasure of God and God with his merciful providence guides us in our chase for this ‘game’. We hold the arrow in the bow and while there is time – that is the ‘game’ is in sight – we should ‘strike’ and gain the good pleaasure of God – that we should seize the moment, it is something that is not always available, and while it is before us we should take our opportunity.

We know that anyone who has ever heard Tom Price speak will be frantically clicking away at the download buttons….

it behooveth thee to glory in My name, not in thine own;

(Baha’u’llah, The Arabic Hidden Words)

I feel very uncomfortable about the way you guys promote one individual. I hope this isn’t any kind of electioneering!! Please forgive me for being frank. I have the best intentions and bear no malice towards anyone. Give talks, promote the Teachings but in a humbly way or try and be a little wiser and tone it down a bit. Statements like the above polarize Baha’is and our Faith is about unity not the importance of any individual however talented.

Tom should know better. The Master was always humble and NEVER promoted his own self or talks but always promoted the Blessed Beauty. We are not perfect but Tom should know much better as I thought he was much more mature than to allow his name to be bandied about like a pop star.

Mirza Abu’l-Fadl was an outstanding Bahá’í scholar. Early in this century the Master sent him to the United States of America both to teach and to help the believers to deepen. ‘After his return, he and a number of American pilgrims were seated in the presence of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in Akka. The pilgrims began to praise Mirza Abu’l-Fadl for the help he had given them, saying that he had taught many souls, defended the Cause most ably against its adversaries, and had helped to build a strong and dedicated Bahá’í community in America. As they continued to pour lavish praise upon him, Mirza Abu’l-Fadl became increasingly depressed and dejected, until he burst into tears and wept loudly. The believers were surprised and could not understand this, even thinking that they had not praised him enough! ‘Then ‘Abdu’l-Bahá explained that by praising him they had bitterly hurt him, for he considered himself as utter nothingness in the Cause and believed with absolute sincerity that he was not worthy of any mention or praise.’
(Honnold, Annamarie, Vignettes from the Life of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá)

I wish you all the best with your talks Tom and hope you enjoy your time. I’m nobody but I hope you have a little think about this.

I had to use an anonymous email and name as I don’t want your fans coming after me LOL but my concern is genuine and sincere and I mean you well and I love and respect you. Forgive me if I have offended anyone or you.

Jo

Jo (January 1, 2013 at 12:35 PM)

Hi Jo, thanks for your comment and please understand that Tom has nothing to do with the way the team at Baha’i Blog has promoted his talks.

Some of the points you raised are valid concerns, but when we write about something here on Baha’i Blog, whether it be about a talk, or a Baha’i musician and their album, or even about a topic like the Nineteen Day Feast, our articles are written with a personal tone in the way we express ourselves.

One could even argue that we shouldn’t ever write about musicians, or individuals doing things in the world because this may be seen as ‘campaigning’, but one of the aims of Baha’i Blog is to let Baha’is know about the many wonderful initiatives and resources out there in the world. We do have a Directory on the site, and we could just allow Baha’is to use this resource alone, but the fact is that they don’t, and furthermore it would be quite boring, so the team at Baha’i Blog tries to bring certain things to the attention of its readers when possible, and the tone they use when they write about it is an expression of their own enthusiasm.

The point is that the lines for this sort of thing are blurred and difficult. A good talk is a good talk, a good musician is a good musician. Our hope is that Baha’is have the maturity to separate the individual from the content, and that the Baha’i community deepens themselves enough about Baha’i elections and the role of institutions so that such interviews or posts do not influence them in any way shape or form.

I hope you’ve found the blog and the content we’ve provided useful, and thanks again for your input Jo!

Naysan

Naysan (January 1, 2013 at 8:12 PM)

Hi Naysan. I really appreciate your open mindedness and I love the way you explained it. I love your maturity and that shows that the Baha’i Community is able here to consult openly and frankly with complete unity. It’s a huge plus for us when we can explain our concerns openly knowing Baha’is will listen and be loving as you have been. We always want and need creative people like Tom who act as vehicles for inspiring others to greater heights of service and devotion.

[…] Blog has posted some of Tom Price’s other talks such as The Five Year Plan (which is still one of our most popular posts), and more recently Recreating Ourselves in the […]

What is people’s understanding of how to win the good pleasure of God and how do we know if or when we have won it? For me personally it’s been a lifelong campaign to win God’s good pleasure but I’ve never actually known if I have or not. Even though I fast every year, in the Naw Ruz prayer Baha’u’llah tells us not to be too presumptuous because God could decree one who has not fasted as having fasted and one who has fasted as having never fasted!! So I assume this applies to everything we do for the Faith. All I really want personally at the end of the day is for God in the next world to say well done.

I thought about whether pleasing the House of Justice wins the good pleasure of God but there were people who had tremendous praise heaped upon them by Baha’u’llah and the Master only to become Covenant breakers so even if we’re really trying to win God’s good pleasure when and how do we know? Anyone?

If Tom gave a talk about that I would be very interested to hear it. Could he think about that? Love to all.

Jo

I may be a little biased being Tom’s son… but I can’t get enough of these talks and the many I have of Tom… I would argue that I’ve listened to them more than anyone in the world… they are in my ipod, my cd player, my computer, and anywhere else I can keep them. I keep the recordings constantly playing in my car to and from work… and most especially there is nothing better than when I’m traveling long distances! We all have talents… Tom has this great talent. The talks always seem to have a great balance of content, analogy, and humor! I hope you guys will find his many other talks… http://global-music.org/tom%20price%20talks.htm

What Baha’is Believe

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia.

We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their cultures; and to elders both past and present.
